As an extension of our world percussion class, we started a Steel Drum ensemble this semester at Hope International University (HIU). The students are taking to steel drums (also known as “pans”) like fish to water. This semester is going to be a great time. I’ll be posting updates as the semester progresses.
As far as I know, the steel drum is one of the few (if not only) instrument families created in the 20th century. Many of the original creators are still alive. Amazing! They are a joy to play.
